Nubian Nights Out Presents Who Taught You? – Art Exhibition
This July Nubian Nights Out invites you to a viewing of their first art exhibition: NNO Presents: Who Taught You? A selection of works in celebration of Black women and the diverse, unique and authentic qualities found within them.
Nubian Nights Out founder Cherrelle Douglas completed a fashion styling course at Central Saint Martins and a series of workshops at the London College of Fashion. She gained invaluable skills and experience in editorial, commercial and advertising shoots which led her to begin a career as a freelance fashion stylist.
With a number of magazine publications under her belt including Tape, Institute, Dark Beauty, Coco, XO Magazine, Fashionising.com, Pause, Disorder, TMRW and Notion, and with high profile clients such as Vidal Sassoon and Schwarzkopf, Cherrelle continues to collaborate with a number of photographers on various editorial and commercial projects. She has also worked with celebrities including Lethal Bizzle, Greg James and Cris Cab, and has assisted on projects with Conor Maynard and the dance group Flawless.
Beginning in December 2014, Nubian Nights Out is a new conscious collective of young, progressive London-based Black women and men multi-disciplined within the creative industries including, photography, fashion, music, film and PR, looking to network with other professionals from all industries.
It was initially created to connect with and have constructive conversations with other like-minded people within the African/Caribbean diaspora in the UK interested in learning more about Black History and identity. They attend a lot of events including lectures, film screenings and tours. To date, there are 503 members signed up to the international networking site Meetup.com where regular events are organised.
Who Taught You? is a title which takes inspiration from the late Malcolm X’s infamous speech ‘Who Taught You To Hate Yourself?’ and is a platform for reclaiming Black beauty.
She owns her image…
She owns her confidence…
She loves and embraces herself on her own terms – not one set for her by a Eurocentric standard of beauty.
In the form of stark and revealing photography by the group’s fine artist Kimberley Williams and New York based artist Passions Ink, the exhibition will showcase Black women in a light each subject feels she should be represented in. She owns her image. She owns her confidence. She loves and embraces herself on her own terms- not one set for her by a Eurocentric standard of beauty.
