DISCUSSION – Did Marcus Garvey Have All The Answers?
So as I’m wilin’ out to west coast rapper Kendrick Lamar’s new song “The Blacker The Berry“, amongst the lines of “This plot is bigger than me, it’s generational hatred, It’s genocism, it’s grimy, little justification“;
“I said they treat me like a slave, cah’ me black, Woi, we feel a whole heap of pain, cah’ we black“;
and “My hair is nappy, my dick is big, my nose is round and wide, You hate me don’t you?“, I hear the line…
So don’t matter how much I say I like to preach with the Panthers,
Or tell Georgia State Marcus Garvey got all the answers…
Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr., ONH (17 August 1887 – 10 June 1940), was a Jamaican political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator who was a staunch proponent of the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements, to which end he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL). He founded theBlack Star Line, which promoted the return of the African diaspora to their ancestral lands.
Garvey was unique in advancing a Pan-African philosophy to inspire a global mass movement and economic empowerment focusing on Africa known as Garveyism.
It got me thinking did he have all the answers? We are building a Black UK economy…
What would you take from Garvey’s empowerment movement and what would you leave?
